Something attempted, something done, has earned a night's repose." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

American Storytelling
The Fireside Poets

The Fireside Poets were so called because their poems were often read at the fireside for family entertainment. They chose "comfortable" subject matter such as love, patriotism, nature, family, and religion. They wrote poems that were more comforting than challenging to the audience. Holmes, Whittier, Longfellow, and Lowell introduced uniquely American subject matter, themes, and abolitionist issues to the public.

Students must select and prepare a poem of at least 25 lines for oral presentation to the class. Each group member must participate in the oral presentation. You must also create a poster to accompany your presentation. No group may do the same poem, and all poets must be covered.
