Searching the Library Catalog
The Library Catalog can be searched in several ways. The following options are found in a dropdown menu that says Select a Search Type on the Basic Search page.
Select the TITLE option if you know the title.
Use the AUTHOR option if you are looking for books by a particular author.
- Remember: last name, then first -- steinbeck john or armstrong louis.
Try the SUBJECT option if you are searching for books on a particular topic.
- Remember: broad term first, then narrower -- history united states or cookery mexican.
The KEYWORD search does just that: keyword search of Title, Author, Subject and Notes fields.
- If you simply enter search terms, the Library Catalog automatically inserts AND between them
- To include a phrase in your search, simply use a Boolean operator -- united nations and war
Finding an Item on the Shelves:
When you find a book you like in the Library Catalog:
First check the LOCATION, CALL # and STATUS in the book record.
The CALL NUMBER gives the exact location of a copy on the shelf. It would be a good idea to write it down.
Before you look for a book, note its STATUS:
"Not CHECKED OUT" = the book is on the shelf, note the call number & location
"CHECKED OUT" = the copy is checked out by another patron.
A date is shown = the due date for the checked out book.
"Lost" = the book has been checked out for a long period of time and is considered lost.
"In Transit = the book is on it's way to or from another library.
If no copies are available,
~ Please come to the circulation desk to have a copy held for you.
Location & Branch:
The location & branch will tell you which Olympia library has the book and what area of the library the book may be found in.
