HEALTHY SNACKS Your child is welcome to bring a healthy snack to class. Healthy snacks would include cereal, fruit, cheese and crackers, fruit snacks, popcorn, pretzels, granola and cereal bars, fresh vegetables, peanut butter crackers, etc. Your child may also bring water to drink. When it's warm I would suggest freezing a partially filled bottle overnight and then filling it in the morning. This will help to keep it cold throughout the day. Please refrain from sending sugar based beverages.
BIRTHDAYS Please feel free to send a treat for your child's birthday. There is no need to check with me prior to sending the treat. Store purchased treats are required.
CHANGE IN AFTER SCHOOL PLANS If your child has a change in after school plans please notify me in writing. If your child is a bus rider and you do not notify the school office or me, your child will be placed on the bus.
HOMEWORK Adequate time is generally provided for most children to complete the assigned work during class. Occasionally your child will have homework. It is due at 7:50 the following morning. Work that is late will be done during Activity Time.
OPERATION: RESPECT EACH OTHER OREO is a positive reinforcement program that may be implemented for good choices and good behaviors. Paper OREO cookies are given out frequently to those children displaying preferred behaviors. When a child receives an OREO it is signed and placed in the cookie barn. Each week we have a drawing for one winner. That person receives a package of OREO cookies.
DISCIPLINE Children are expected to comply by the school and classroom rules at all times. The classroom rules are developed by the class the first week of school and posted in the room. If a child is not behaving appropriately a visual warning will be given in the form of a stop sign. If the infraction continues a second stop sign will be administered. Four stop signs will result in the loss of a recess.
DISAGREEMENTS AMONG PEERS When children disagree on something I try to encourage them to talk about what has happened and agree on a story. Then the students come up with ideas to fix the problem. I monitor the discussions and step in if necessary. Usually an agreement can be reached by the two parties involved and a solution can be agreed upon. Misunderstandings frequently happen at school. If the problem becomes repetitive it will be further addressed.
NEWSLETTERS AND WEEKLY WORK Newsletters will be sent home on the last school day of the week with your child's work from the week. If there is an exception I will notify you. Please forgive me if I forget to send things home. On occasion I have been known to get so wrapped up in the daily activities that things get overlooked. Art work will not be sent home until the end of the year. The children have art portfolios to keep their projects in.
TESTING ISAT Testing will be done in March. Third graders are tested in reading, math, and writing.
VOICE MAIL AND E-MAIL If you need to contact me for any reason I do have voice mail. Mrs. Lessen will connect you to my extension. The ringer is turned off, so even if the class is not in the room there is a good chance that I won't hear the phone. I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you are calling about a change in dismissal plans Mrs. Lessen will take that information and relay it to me. I typically don't check voice mail until school has been dismissed. You can also contact me
by e-mail. My address is REQUEST FOR HOMEWORK If your child is absent and you would like the work sent home with a sibling or a neighbor please let me know. If your child will be gone for a planned extended period of time and you would like to take the work with you, please let me know at least a week in advance if at all possible.
Should you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at school or at home. I'm looking forward to a fun-filled year at Olympia West. By working together and keeping the lines of communication open we can ensure that your child has a positive and productive third grade experience.
