Strategies for Constructing Meaning

Summarizing

The strategies that a student may use for constructing meaning and summarizing non-fiction text progress through a hierarchy: preview text, examine first and last sentence, use repeated words and synonyms, categorize similar words and details, notice transitions, combine summarizing techniques, and analyze text.  These strategies were first introduced to our faculty by Christi Hannah, a consultant with Gretchen Courtney & Associates, Ltd.
