Word Splash

This strategy is designed to help students categorize key vocabulary terms in order to comprehend text.

1) The teacher displays key vocabulary words on the board in a random order (splashed).

2) Students are asked to write a sentence using any three of the terms on the board.  Students may share some of their sentences.

3) Students are asked to choose one word that is overarching (a theme, topic, or category).

4) Students arrange the words in a hierarchy. They must be able to explain the relationship between the words.

5) Students read the passage and compare their vocabulary terms to the way in which they are used in the text.

6) Students compare their responses with each other.
